Just Before the Day Ends
Never walk alone at dusk
the crows will land
too close
scrutinize the way you walk
under the low hanging branches
they will watch your every breath
and you will both
understand
why the day singes
at its edge
you will count your steps
until you finally arrive
at your front door
find the porch light off
your whole house
leaning towards the night
a citadel
of dwindling mercy
